In the high tech world we live in, it is easy to believe Forex trading can be “cracked” by some kind of software program or custom indicator.  But even when you add these advanced tools to your trading tool box, it is often the BASICS that ensure success. Many new Forex traders try to skip this step and jump right to the high tech trading solution.

But without a firm grasp of the BASICS, they often fail even with the custom indicators, sophisticated systems and automated robots.

Just think about it…

Most of the athletes you watch performing your favorite sports are not successful because they have some kind of “secret” move or “special” piece of equipment.  They are successful because they master the basics by practicing them endlessly. Todd Granthem went over something important on the Daily Forex Video inside the Forex Nitty Gritty Insiders website.  (This is the members website that accomplanies the Forex Nitty Gritty video course).  I thought this is a very important topic so I wanted to give you a heads up here.

Here is a little about the money management concept I talk about…

Forex Nitty Gritty teaches the Simple Trading Method. The Simple Trading Method uses the charts to determine where the stop loss should be.  Most proven Forex trading methods determine stop losses using price action.

But what happens when the stop loss is greater than the risk allowed by your money management?

Example…

You have a $1000 account and only want to use 3% for each trade… so you have a max of $30 per trade.

If you are trading 1 mini lot ($1 per pip)… your maximum stop loss can be only 30 pips.

So, what do you do if the chart says you should place your stop loss 100 pips away?

A lot of traders wrongly reduce the stop loss down to 30 pips.  But what they should do is reduce the lot size they are trading so they can place the stop loss where it is supposed to be without breaking their money management rules!

The charts determine the stop loss level… not your account balance or risk tolerance.

Anyway, that is what I was taking about on the Inside Forex Nitty Gritty Blog today in reaction to watching the Daily Forex Video.  I suggest you check it out, because it is important regardless of the Forex trading system you are using.

This is a very important topic.  Unfortunately, it is a little tricky to figure out unless you are using a trading method that only has one stop loss and price target. In the case of Forex Nitty Gritty… the risk reward starts off good and then gets BETTER as the trade goes on.

Like I said, I wrote an entire post about it, so I won’t go into detail here.

Most of you might not be familiar with Forex Nitty Gritty by Bill Poulos.  I thought it is such a great Forex program (especially for beginners), that I started a separate blog to talk about it and my experience trading it.  While the topics are specific to Forex Nitty Gritty and the Simple Trading Method… there are lessons like these to be learned by every trader.

If the market is not acting in the way that makes your trading system profitable… then you won’t be able to trade successfully!

If you are like most new Forex traders, you were attracted to the Forex market buy the stories of making money.  Or maybe, working from home was what you were looking to do.  But you have probably found that making your dream of becoming a profitable trader come true is harder than you thought.

This is why I recommend Forex Nitty Gritty.

I truly believe that making money in the Forex market can be taught.  This means YOU can learn it. But the problem is, most new traders don’t go about learning currency trading the right way. And this is why they fail, not because Forex trading is “difficult”.  The fact is, trading Forex is not all that difficult when you know what you are doing.

Problem #1: Trying To Learn Trading For Free

Now there is nothing wrong with this, I’ve learned a lot from ebooks and I use expert advisors.  But you never really learn how to become a Forex trader. And normally, new Forex traders never have the confidence necessary to put these trading systems into action, or set up the trading robot. So, what’s the point?

At the end of the day… NO trading and NO money!

So, how should the new Forex trader learn to trade Forex?

First, get away from the Internet. There is just too much information out there coming at you from all directions to make sense.  To learn Forex, you need to focus… and you just can’t do that while looking at hundreds of sites and receiving 50 emails in your inbox each day.

Second, you need a trading system that has proven itself. and the confidence to put the system into action. You need to understand the specifics of the trading system so you understand WHY you are doing what you are doing.  Without this knowledge, you will never have the confidence needed to trade the system for real.

Without a doubt, Forex trading beginners need to gather knowledge in order to be successful. But at some point this thirst for knowledge can actually play against your chances of success. You don’t need to know everything about Forex trading to be successful, you only need the right information.

Knowledge Without Action Is Useless

I’m going to use an example from the fitness industry, and then we’ll talk about how this effects Forex trading beginners. Go to a fitness forum and you will quickly identify hundreds (if not thousands), of posters that know a lot about exercise and fitness… that have failed to reach the goal they set out to achieve. They know all the scientific names, have studied all the top trainers and could earn a college degree with all the knowledge they know. But they are still fat, weak and with an unfit body.

You see, the mistake they are making is putting their priority on gaining knowledge, and not putting the knowledge they have into action. They spend their time in front of the computer and reading books. Neither activity gives them the results they desire because they aren’t spending any time in the gym.

How This Relates To Forex Trading Beginners

The Forex market is not something you just want to jump into. So, the beginner Forex trader wants to learn everything they can before they put any money into it. They go from one website to another. They buy ebooks and take courses. And at the end of the day all this knowledge has the reverse effect of only making them confused.

Sometimes, too much knowledge can actually be a handicap. If you had to take everything into account before you make a currency trade, you’ll end up analyzing and not trading. This system says go long… but this other system says go short. What should I do? The beginner Forex traders usually ends up doing nothing… which means they have no chance of making any money.

The fact is, Forex is such a big topic that you may NEVER know everything. But the good news is… you don’t have to know everything in order to be successful. You only need to know the information necessary to put a successful trading strategy into action. Nothing more, and nothing less.

You see, I am not suggesting you jump into the Forex market without doing your homework. Just opening up an account and making trades off the top of your head is the fastest way to lose money. What I am suggesting is you learn the right information really well and then put that knowledge into action.

You could spend the rest of your life studying Forex trading. And maybe you might be the one person on the planet that knows the most about Forex trading. But who cares when your goal was to actually make money trading currency. Unless you’ve figured out a way to get paid for studying, you need to trade in order to make any money.

When everything is said and done, FOCUS and ACTION are the fastest way to go from a Forex trading beginner to a successful Forex trader. Focus only on the information necessary to put a proven Forex trading system into action. But the most important part is to use that knowledge to take action by actually trading a proven Forex trading system. This is the fastest way to make money as a Forex trader.

Trading Forex makes you reflect a lot.  You end up saying, “I’m not going to get into this trade”… and then the market goes off in the direction you thought it would.  Or you say, “I’m going to get out of this trade”… and then the market makes a huge move in your favor.  Whether you consider this frustrating or fun, you are constantly trying to see into the future and looking into the past with 20/20 vision.

So, I wanted to take this opportunity to look into the past with 20/20 vision about LEARNING TO TRADE FOREX.
